CHILD SAFETY

At Dollar Curtains and Blinds we pride ourselves on always being at the forefront of child safety. All of our products comply with the Australian child safety standards.

We are continuously introducing new ways to improve the safety of all of our products as well as ensuring we include warning labels on products which could be a risk.

STEPS TO REDUCE THE RISK...

Follow these four simple steps to ensure that Curtain and Blind cords/chains in your home are out of reach of children, particularly children under six.

1. Check your Curtain and Blind cords

  • Do this anywhere you are staying, including on holiday.
  • Check for loose or looped cords that your child can reach from the floor or by climbing on furniture.
  • Immediately tie cords out of reach and move away any furniture children might climb on to reach them.

2. Secure loose cords out of reach

  • Buy cleats or tensioning devices from one of our stores.
  • Use at least two screws to fix each cleat or tensioning device in a place that is out of reach of children.
  • Never secure these devices with materials that fail when a load is placed on them, such as double- sided tape or glue.

You can cut the dangerous loop out of some cords/ chains and attach a tassel to the end of each strand.
Some blinds will not operate without the loop, so get specialist advice before doing this.

If you cannot fix your unsafe cords and chains out of reach, get a reliable tradesperson to do it for you. If you are renting your home, seek help from your landlord or agent.

3. Choose safe Curtains and Blinds

Only buy new Curtains and Blinds which:

  • Have warning labels to remind you of the dangers to children
  • Provide a way to secure cords/chains so there are no loops or strands that children can reach, or
  • Operate without exposed cords/chains.

4. Keep children away from all cords/chains

  • Move anything a young child can sit in, stand in or climb on (like cots, highchairs, beds, sofas, tables, chairs and bookshelves) away from cords/ chains—even those tied around a cleat, as your child may be able to untie them.
  • Do not let your child play near cords/chains they can easily reach.
  • Never leave your child alone in a room with cords/chains they can reach.

PRODUCTS WHICH REDUCE THE RISK...

  • Our range of fully automated motor systems. With no cords being used, these can be fitted to many of our products, allowing a child safe alternative.
  • Verticals with a wand system. The wand has an inbuilt cord to tilt the blade.
  • Curtains on a Motorised or Hand Operated Track.
  • Drift panels with no cords.
  • Shutters which use no cords.

Dollar Curtains + Blinds is proud to partner with ‘One Tree Planted’ to promote sustainability through reforestation. We are always looking for ways to reduce our environmental footprint and give back. What better way to do it than giving Australia more trees? And this is made possible by your orders with us.

For every order placed in December 2020, we will plant a tree on your behalf as part of One Tree Planted’s reforestation project within Australia. Trees will be planted to recover forests affected by the 2019-20 Black Summer Bushfires and restore native habitat vital for wildlife, by planting in areas requiring rehabilitation or ecological diversity to provide homes for animals.

    Reforestation in Australia

With over 123 million hectares of native forests, Australia has the seventh largest forest area in the world, making up three per cent of the Earth’s forests. The highly documented bushfire crisis in Australia has been one of the worst in the country’s history. The land, wildlife, people and businesses affected from this disaster has been unfathomable with nearly 6 million hectares (15 million acres) of bush devastated and over 480 million animals killed across the country, as of January 2020.

It’s with this in mind, along with One Tree Planted and the Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife, we are supporting the Bushfire Recovery Nurseries project to replant trees in affected locations across Australia. Locations will all have a focus on re-building habitats for affected species’ such as the black glossy cockatoo and koala.

As an Australian owned and family operated business for more than 50 years, we value these types of partnerships to give back to our local communities. Working with One Tree Planted we, along with you for choosing Dollar Curtains + Blinds, will be doing our part to reforest land and restore habitats in 2020 and beyond.

Most Aussie families come to a time where we wish to sell our homes. Maybe you need to move closer to work or other family members. Perhaps you have a growing family, and your house has become too small. Or perhaps you’ve got an empty nest and it’s time to downsize.

There’s also those that invest in property and come to the point that it’s time to sell. Whatever your reason, the one thing we all want is the highest price possible. Before you put your property up for sale there are clever ways to increase its market value. By investing a little into the appearance of your home, you’re more likely to get top dollar for the sale. You don’t need to invest in a major home renovation to accomplish a greater sale price. More often than not, simple cosmetic upgrades can have a great impact. Simple items like changing your curtains or  blinds can do the trick.

Below we have a few simple tips that can help you make your home more attractive to buyers using cost effective window dressings.

What room needs curtains or blinds?

Different interior décor works in different types of homes and rooms, as does window dressings. From a strategic perspective your personal taste does not matter. For the general consumer, some rooms work well with curtains, while others are better off with blinds. There are several factors to consider including the styling of the room itself, the amount of natural light it gets and how much privacy it requires.

Curtains and blinds are more than just decorative items. Part of their purpose is to control how much natural light gets inside the room and to provide privacy. Additionally, they can provide warmth in cold weather and help to allow air circulation in climates where that’s suitable.

Weigh up these factors when choosing between curtains or blinds for each of your rooms and how it may suit the lifestyle of potential buyers.

    Go for neutral colours

Many of us have a hard time imagining a property with minor cosmetic changes. Using vibrant curtains or blinds in your interior decorating can be a great way to add a visual statement to your personal home. The problem is your personal sense of style may not suit potential buyers.

When you’re selling your home, it’s preferable that you use neutral colours throughout your styling. Neutral colours are understated which can also make a room appear more elegant. They are less likely to overwhelm potential buyers and therefore allow your buyers to see all the possibilities a room holds for them.

    Create visual appeal

Lived in homes tend to show signs of wear and tear over the years particularly for families with young children. We don’t tend to noticed the marks, stains and tears when it’s our own home however visitors notice them immediately, particularly if they are assessing the quality of the property like a prospective buyer does. Replacing old window dressings is a great way to give the whole home a clean, fresh look.

Your curtains and blinds can be the finishing touch that makes or breaks a great sale price. The right selection for your property is the key. For example, if your living room is built with floor-to-ceiling windows with lots of natural light and a great view, installing motorised blinds can create a dramatic effect in the room. The room’s natural beauty can be shown gradually by raising the blinds with the remote control, slowly letting the light in and view revealed.

Your choice of curtains and blinds can play a huge role in how attractive your home is to buyers. We’ve all seen the reality TV shows about renovating and flipping houses and how the budgets can blow out unexpectedly.

Installing curtains and blinds is an easy way to raise your home’s market value. Contact us today for our recommendations to suit your property along with a free quote.
